Whether we like it or not, this is not going to business as usual for F1. Starting the season in the middle of summer is not ideal for any team so you can expect some surprises. As such, it might be the opportune moment to take a risk on your betting strategy, perhaps by overlooking the usual candidates. Or what might have been with Williams had he not tragically met his untimely death at the '94 San Marino Grand Prix. This blog aims to be slightly different, by briefly looking at Senna's formative years at Lotus.<br />

Coming into 1985, the Norfolk-based team had not won a race since the sudden death of its charismatic founder, Colin Chapman, in December 1982. Lotus had endured a turbulent '83 season. But it bounced back superbly to become a regular frontrunner again during '84, enjoying its most successful season since 1978. The newly-released book, <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087BQRRTG/ref=sr_1_23?dchild=1&keywords=f1+books&qid=1587438691&s=digital-text&sr=1-23&swrs=F7F52AAF543DB02BAA26AB473F07775E" target="_blank"><i>Team Lotus: Beyond the Colin Chapman Era</i></a>, details precisely how the team achieved this. But by the end of '84, it seemed a key ingredient to elevate Lotus back to the winner's circle was missing. Enter, Ayrton Senna – Lotus's new signing for 1985. <br />

Within his single season at Toleman, Senna had scored as many points as every other driver for that team combined within its history. He had even matched the points scored by Nigel Mansell in 1984, who was the man he would be replacing at Lotus. This despite the Brazilian having had inferior equipment to the Englishman. Thus coming into the '85 Formula 1 season, the press were expecting big things of Team Lotus and its new signing. F1's rising star was also the first driver to be signed to Lotus following Colin Chapman's untimely passing.<br />

The son of a wealthy businessman, Senna began his motorsport career in karting aged 13. After graduating to open-wheel racing in 1981 driving in Formula Ford 1600, he won the '82 British and European Formula Ford 2000 championships. He then triumphed in the '83 British Formula Three Championship, which put him on the radar of several F1 teams. After impressing in tests for Williams, McLaren and Brabham, the first two teams made offers for '84 in exchange for him signing long-term contracts, while Brabham also showed interest.<br />

However ultimately the latter came to nothing, due to its main sponsor Parmalat wanting an Italian driver and Nelson Piquet (Brabham's number one driver) allegedly putting a stop to Senna joining his team. It then looked like he would sign for Team Lotus, having been approached by Peter Warr. However, when John Player rejected the appointment, Senna signed for the midfield Toleman team. It gave him the space to learn the cars and circuits without being under the microscope, as he would have been with one of the big names. This plan paid off handsomely as he would join Lotus with equal number one status, on a salary nearly twelve times what Peter Warr had offered him a year previously.<br />

Senna's and Lotus's First Win Post Chapman's Death </h4>

The new Estoril circuit played host to round two of the 1985 Championship, and Senna continued to impress his new employers by taking his maiden pole position, three places ahead of his team-mate, Elio de Angelis in fourth. Come the start, the circuit was hit by torrential rain which didn't let up throughout the race. Nevertheless, the drivers braved the atrocious conditions in which several of them would spin out after aquaplaning. While others complained of not being able to see anything when following other cars, due to the spray, Senna had no such complaints as he romped home to his first win as though he was driving on a different circuit to everyone else. "That race," Renault driver Patrick Tambay said, "was a nightmare. It was p*ssing with rain from start to finish, very, very flooded everywhere, the cloud ceiling very low and the light very poor. It was survival of the fittest."<br />
<br />
F1's new superstar had shown what he was capable of at Monaco the previous year, and he now underlined that with what he later described as his greatest ever victory. "People later said that my win in the wet at Donington in '93 was my greatest performance - no way! I had traction control! OK, I didn't make any real mistakes, but the car was so much easier to drive. It was a good win, sure, but, compared with Estoril '85, it was nothing, really," Senna would later claim. Meanwhile de Angelis in the other Lotus finished a lapped fourth. He had been unable to match his team-mate's pace (partly due to a slow puncture). Nevertheless, this result, along with Senna's win, elevated Lotus to the top of the constructors' championship for the first time in seven years. Moreover, this had been the first time the 97T had run in the wet, and the circuit had been very different layout to that of the previous race at Rio. Therefore, the omens looked good for the season ahead for the staff from Ketteringham Hall.<br />

Before the Monaco race not long afterwards, Peter Warr issued a statement informing rival teams that Senna was contracted to Lotus until the end of 1987. This had followed rumours that Enzo Ferrari had approached the Brazilian for '86. However, Senna had reportedly asked for a figure which Ferrari told him was "stupid money!" The Brazilian again showed why he was potentially in such demand, as he secured another pole position, his third in four races. Within the confines of the Monte-Carlo circuit, the young Brazilian's unique technique of stabbing the throttle to ensure his turbo worked more effectively proved even more effective.<br />

<i>"Myself, and my friend had already booked our tickets for Monaco 1985 before Senna had won at Portugal in the Lotus. So the idea of him in a proper race-winning car had just added to our expectation for the trip. We went down in a coach stopping only briefly in Paris on the way before arriving at our hotel in Nice on the Friday ready for qualifying on the Saturday and the race on Sunday. We had treated ourselves to Hotel Mirabeau grandstand tickets which were quite expensive at the time but well worth it as not only did they include seats which offered a great view but also a splendid lunch on both days which was served round the five-star hotels pool by waiters in immaculate white uniforms.</i><br />

The shot was taken with a 200mm telephoto lens but the reason I managed to get it so close to the action and was able to take both the pictures of de Angelis's Lotus and other cars in the race as well, was that one of Bernie's minions had left a hole in the catch fence and I had managed to position myself perfectly to get some great images. Unfortunately it was filled in for the Sunday which meant I took hardly any pictures on the actual race day.</i><br />

<i>"For the race, Senna had qualified his Lotus on pole but his car started trailing a smoke trail early on and I think went bang on lap 12 unseen by us. The race then became a battle between [Alain] Prost and [Michele] Alboreto with [Riccardo] Patrese, Mansell, [Jacques] Laffite and Piquet in close pursuit. Clearly, we only had a small view of the track but we didn't need a commentary on the race thanks to the group of crazy Italians in one of the flats on the infield from where we sitting. They had a TV in their room but when the cars came round they would dash onto the flats small balcony and scream their support for the Ferraris as the red cars sped by. They went especially bonkers when Alboreto took the lead and we thought the balcony would collapse as they jumped up and down as he drove past. But then there was a mass moan of disappointment from inside in the flat as he spun along with [Niki] Lauda on the fluids left by the enormous Piquet/Patrese smash on the main straight and he had to rejoin the race back in fourth.</i><br />

Having avoided getting run over by Clerk of the Course Jacky Ickx on his motorbike, we discovered on a raised gantry Murray Walker interviewing Martin Brundle and Jonathan Palmer about their races. And being a bunch of British Formula 1 fans abroad we began some good-natured chanting which seemingly didn't go down too well with the sport's greatest commentator. </i><br />

<i>"On the race weekend these days a large number of billboards covering the spot where the Mirabeau grandstand used to be so the shots that I got of these two Lotus's as well the other cars are no longer possible which is sad but I still have the original enlargement of Senna next to my desk. Beyond 1985 </h4>

Senna's time with Lotus marked the team's final flowering as a grand prix-winning outfit. Given better equipment, he would have become champion with the team. The newly-released book, <i>Team Lotus: Beyond the Colin Chapman Era</i>, details precisely why this did not happen. Nevertheless, after three seasons and six grands prix wins for the team, Senna departed for McLaren. The Brazilian did subsequently go on to win the drivers title at the first time of asking, whereas Lotus's fortunes took a sharp nosedive thereafter.<br />
<br />
Throughout his time at Ketteringham Hall, he ingratiated himself with his engineers in a way that previous Lotus drivers like de Angelis and Mansell had not. This was one of the reasons why Lotus eventually focused all its efforts on him. However, as it increasingly became clear to the Brazilian that Lotus was not going to provide him with a championship-winning car yet again in '87, Senna began to distance himself from the team. The Brazilian undoubtedly had the skill in the car. He had raced more maturely during '87, particularly in comparison to '85, so looked more like a champion in waiting. Hence why it was a particular shame there were not enough funds to undertake more development of the '87 Lotus car, to allow Senna to go for the title. The subsequent battles between himself and the two Williams that year would have been epic for watching F1 fans.<br />

The 2020 F1 World Championship season is just around the corner. With the world’s top sports leagues slowly returning to action, Formula 1 recently confirmed that they will be opening their 2020 season next month, beginning with a double-header in Austria’s Red Bull Ring on July 5th.<br />

Oddsmakers have put defending and six-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton as the odds on favorite to win the 2020 F1 World Championships. Aside from Hamilton, 19 other drivers are eyeing to become the next Formula One world champion.<br />

According to this list of highly-rated F1 betting sites, the following five drivers are the favorites to win the 2020 Formula 1 Drivers Championship.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Lewis Hamilton</span></h3>

Leading the list of the top five favorites is Briton Hamilton. The 35-year-old has dominated the F1 scene during the current decade, winning five out of the last six F1 World Championships, including the last three. Hamilton has won 22 out of the last 40 Grand Prix races over the last two years and showed no signs of slowing down last season.<br />
<br />
Hamilton set the record for most points earned in a season with 413 last year. He is just seven wins behind the legendary Schumacher's record of 91 career wins and one shy of the German's record seven F1 World Championships. With 11 race wins each in 2018 and 2019 plus world title in both seasons, Hamilton has <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-motor-f1-season-hamilton/hamilton-has-schumachers-biggest-records-in-sight-idUSKBN20R07V">both Schumacher records in sight in 2020</a>.<br />

During the preseason testing last February, Mercedes looked good as ever and ran many laps without major issues. With an innovative steering system, Mercedes’ cars are primed for success in 2020. With one of the greatest (if not the greatest ever) on the steering wheel, there is no question why Hamilton is the betting favorite to win a fourth consecutive F1 World Championship.<br />

In 2015, Max Verstappen was the youngest driver to ever compete in an F1 race. Five years later, the now-22-year-old son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen continues to improve and is coming off a 2019 season where he won a career-high three races.<br />

The Belgian Red Bull driver finished third in the 2020 F1 World Championship, his best finish ever. Aside from three Grand Prix wins, Verstappen also had two poles, three fastest laps, and nine podium finishes in 2019. Except for two races that he didn’t finish, Verstappen placed in the Top 10 in all other races last season.<br />
<br />
Red Bull also looked good during preseason training and they trailed only Mercedes in lap runs during the first practice session. If Red Bull’s cars can be reliable and fast, Verstappen might be able to pick up more wins in 2020 and challenge Hamilton for the F1 World Championship.</div>

Ferrari’s highly touted rookie had an impressive debut season in 2019 where he became the youngest driver to win the Pole Trophy (with seven poles in 2019) and the first non-Mercedes driver to do so since 2014. The 22-year-old Monegasque also finished fourth in the 2019 F1 World Championship while winning two Grand Prix races last year.<br />
<br />
Leclerc's win at the 2019 Italian Grand Prix was the first time in a decade that Ferrari won its home turf race and Leclerc's victory came one week after his first-ever F1 race win in Belgium. Although he only had three podium finishes in the six races after his win in Italy, Leclerc is seen as the future of Ferrari and F1 racing.<br />
<br />
With Ferrari ace Sebastian Vettel <a href="https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/29163796/sebastian-vettel-leave-ferrari-end-year">set to leave the team at the end of the year</a>, Leclerc should be the lead driver for Ferrari in 2020. Valtteri Bottas is Lewis Hamilton’s running mate at Mercedes. The 30-year-old Finnish driver is coming off his best season ever in Formula 1 after finishing second behind Hamilton in the 2019 F1 World Championship.<br />

Bottas had a career-high four wins last season and he also had five poles, three fastest laps, and 15 podium finishes in 2019. He finished with a personal-best 326 points and was the only driver within striking distance of Hamilton throughout the year.<br />

With Charles Leclerc emerging for Scuderia, Vettel is at a crossroads after announcing that he will leave the team at the end of the year.<br />

The 32-year-old is a four-time world champion, having won the F1 World Championship in three consecutive seasons from 2010-2013 while driving for Red Bull. He had been Ferrari’s ace since coming over in 2015 but has not delivered the title that Ferrari has been longing for.<br />

Coming into 1994, Lotus's had just finished sixth in the previous year's constructors' championship and had been battling teams like Ligier, Sauber and Ferrari who had all enjoyed 'works' engine contracts. Whereas Lotus had been enduring 'customer' engines ever since '91. Therefore the team believed the only way for it to beat those ahead would be via an exclusive engine deal with Mugen Honda for '94. "Although it was a 'works' deal, we still had to pay for it, however, it did give us A - Exclusivity and B - Development potential," according to Team Lotus's Head of Archives, Antony Burton who will be a key contributor to our upcoming Lotus books. "If you think about how we did with the Ford HB V8 Series 5 engine and think of what we could have done with the latter Series 7 that Benetton Formula received. We were hitting above our potential. That meant that we would always be playing second best as long as we were stuck with the V8. A costly decision, for sure, but one with a definite view to the future."<br />

It was a big gamble because it either had the potential to make or break the team given its fragile financial position at the time, indeed some debts had been outstanding since 1991. Lotus's ability to race in '94 despite its tight finances was largely thanks to certain creditors rescheduling their payments. All of which meant results were critical to the team's survival beyond that year. Readers of the 1994 book will know that fateful season contained various technical restrictions imposed upon teams, while the upcoming 1990-'95 Lotus book will detail how they conspired against Ketteringham Hall. This partly explains why we saw the team at the back of F1 grids throughout most of that year. Nevertheless, the team with a fighting spirit like no other just carried on believing things would eventually come good for it.<br />

Despite the challenges facing it, it is inspiring just how loyal Lotus's staff were to the dream of re-establishing the iconic brand as F1 frontrunners. Remember, 1994 was probably one of F1's toughest seasons in modern times. Meaning some mechanics had to work over eighty-hour weeks thanks to the ever-changing rules during that year (again details of which are contained within the 1994 book). In addition to this, Lotus had to work with a new engine supplier for the upcoming season.<br />
<br />
Mugen was founded by the son of Honda's owner and provided engine tuning and performance parts to its parent company. A new-for-1994 Mugen engine (known as the ZA5D) with involvement from Honda (one of F1's most successful engine manufactures) was promised to Lotus partway through the season. Until then the team had to use an updated '93 engine which ironically Footwork had ditched for the customer Ford V8 engine. Footwork thereby did the exact opposite to Lotus during the 1993/94 off season in regards to engine choice and the 1990-1995 book will, therefore, investigate which gamble proved the better choice. The new ZA5D Mugen engine therefore gave all at Ketteringham Hall hope, when lesser teams might have thrown in the towel.<br />
<br />
The team's plan for 1994 was to covert its '93 car to a passive suspension and install the (older spec) Mugen engine along with a new semi-automatic gearbox as an interim solution. This was to be known as the 107C until Lotus's new-for-'94 car (the 109) would be ready around the Spanish Grand Prix. The 107C was 45 kilograms overweight partly because the team didn't want to waste precious development funds on its interim car. Again the upcoming Lotus book covering their 1990-1995 period will detail how events then conspired against Kettingham Hall throughout the '94 season, even after the newer 109 chassis was launched. Meaning for the first time in the team's 40-year history they were staring at a pointless season as '94 approached its final quarter.<br />

By contrast Footwork (which remember had swapped Mugen's for a customer Ford V8 in 1994) had been extremely competitive in the early races of 1994. So much so they even were accused of cheating via hidden and invisible legal driver aids after the Aida race (again alluded to in the 1994 book) just like the winners of that event, Michael Schumacher and Benetton, were. <br />

The 1994 Italian Grand Prix, round 11 of 16, would be the crucial race for Team Lotus because this is where its new Mugen engine would make its debut. In comparison to the older unit it was more powerful (1000 RPMs more), 13kgs lighter, and had a lower centre of gravity. At a test before the crucial Monza race Herbert armed with that new ZA5D engine lapped the Silverstone circuit three seconds quicker than his British GP qualifying time. It would have put him third on the Silverstone grid. Would the new engine transform the 109's handling and traction for the rest of the season? That was what Lotus believed and the upcoming 1990-1995 Lotus book explores the detail behind the Hethel based team thinking on this front. In summary, this new Mugen engine was Lotus's final throw of the dice…it was win or bust from here on in. No half measures anymore. <br />

Ketteringham Hall's leading driver Herbert qualified fourth with the new Mugen at Italy thus proving his impressive Silverstone testing time was no fluke. His average qualifying position for the season thus far had been 20th. Whereas his team-mate - Alex Zanardi, on home ground - was forced to use the older engine because Lotus did not have any spare gearboxes compatible with the newer Mugen. Evidence of how bad the team's finances were by this point. Lotus's number two driver managed a season's best 13th on the grid, 1.4s adrift of Herbert. Zanardi claims in his autobiography he would have been on pole with the new Mugen and suggests the telemetry between himself and Herbert proves that via his speed in corners. Nevertheless, there was a buzz of excitement in the Lotus pits afterwards because Mugen had made promising indications. Unfortunately, Eddie Irvine's Jordan behind him missed his braking point so smashed right into the back of the Lotus 109. This sent Herbert into a spin and left the furious driver beached over one of Monza's high kerbs, unable to get going again. Behind the pair, carnage ensued as 21 other cars tried picking their way past the stranded Lotus. The team were then handed a lifeline when the race was stopped and the Lotus (equipped with the new engine) was recovered back to the pits. Unfortunately there proved too much damage to its floor, meaning Herbert took to the spare car - equipped with the older and slower Mugen engine - instead. To add salt to the team's wounds, Herbert was then late out of his pits meaning he took that restart from the pitlane, rather than his fourth position on the grid.<br />

Zanardi was now elevated to the team's leading driver at his home event. However, the Italian was now the subject of Lotus's bad luck. Because at the restarted race, Zanardi had been fighting over 10th place with the leading Benetton of Jos Verstappen during the opening lap. Unfortunately at the Ascari Chicane, the Dutchman missed his braking point and ran into the Lotus (with the older Mugen), thus ending the Italian's race soon afterwards. Herbert's race lasted 13 laps longer because the alternator failed in that spare car, which had not turned a wheel all weekend. The Englishman had moved up 10 places by that point, so some much-needed points were still possible had reliability been on his side. <br />

Irvine was banned from almost as many races as Schumacher during 1994 owing to his crash record. This is on top of the Irishman's various other offences (like those demonstrated at Monza '94 or winding up Senna in '93). Yet interestingly Irvine is largely just seen as a lovable rogue by F1 fans now unlike Schumacher.<br />

"Irvine has done far too much damage this year and should be properly penalised," said a furious Herbert after this race. While Lotus team boss Peter Collins added "Formula 1 doesn't need drivers like this. Irvine's brain has obviously been removed and it is about time that his license is too." It was Irvine's second run-in with the stewards that weekend because the Northern Irishman's Friday qualifying times had been deleted owing to him completing too many laps during the session. The rookie driver jokingly said "maybe we will be OK if we say a junior employee held out our pitboard" following the Benetton fuel fire verdict which had just been announced. Considering that Alesi's Ferrari didn't finish the race, and Berger's had been held up during his pitstop. Had Herbert been able to continue with the new Mugen engine then there's was a very strong chance he would have been on the podium, thus securing the additional Mugen support promised. With that, it's inevitably tempting to think that the Lotus story could have ended differently. As things turned out this result was the final nail in Lotus's coffin because the following day its directors placed the struggling team into administration. Herbert, being one of Lotus most valuable assets, was soon sold off and this blog explains what happened during the rest of his year. While various subsequent efforts were made to revive the team.<br />

It did not help matters that Lotus was unable to recreate the speed shown with the new engine until Herbert's last testing session with the team, just after the Portuguese Grand Prix. Again the 1990-1995 Lotus book will explain this, why the team failed to score a point during those final four races of 1994 (with the new Mugen engine). Moreover, it will look into what Lotus could have done differently to survive? For instance was moving to Mugen for 1994 the right choice or their final death nail? Whereas the upcoming 1983-1989 book will detail how Team Lotus got itself into serious financial problems during the 1990s (whereas comparable teams like Williams only went from strength to strength).<br />

A question for you to ponder... What is it with Team Lotus that makes it appealing? Is it the cars? The drivers? Or history? To key book contributor and Team Lotus Head of Archives, Antony Burton: "It is/was the spirit of Team Lotus... I often say to people that we were the only outfit in F1 with the name 'Team' in it, for that is what we were. A TEAM." It's a spirit and commitment which inspires one to fight against the odds, something you just can't buy. Nelson Piquet is a three-time Formula 1 world champion. Yet you would hardly know it. Or you wouldn't if you use as your sole guide the usual debates about F1 greats, at any stretch.<br />

So why is this? The expressed consensus view is that Piquet impressed and won his first two titles at Brabham where all was laid out for him. Then he moved to Williams alongside Nigel Mansell and was 'found out'. But, as is often the case, the consensus view doesn't tell the whole story.<br />

Monaco 1984. Estoril '85. Donington '93. Some of the great drives by the revered Ayrton Senna fall from the tongue, and are harked back to regularly.<br />
<br />
But even so there are some Senna Formula 1 performances that are about as magnificent but perhaps crowded out from the retro features.<br />
<br />
So, on what would have been the late great Brazilian's 60th birthday, for <b><i>Motor Sport Magazine</i></b> I have looked back at some of the somewhat more forgotten, but still sensational, Senna drives.<br />

Thirty years ago today, Jean Alesi in a Tyrrell announced himself to Formula 1 with an incredible performance, including an incredible battle with Ayrton Senna's McLaren-Honda, in Phoenix for the United States Grand Prix of 1990.<br />

The book is made up of individual portraits in pictures and words of every one of F1's 33 world champions going back to the championship's inception in 1950. So it's from Giuseppe Farina through to Nico Rosberg, stopping off along the way at Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton among many other legendary figures.<br />

For this weighty 240-page book, just as in his 2016 title <i>The Pursuit of Speed</i>, Hamilton has teamed up with father-and-son Bernard and Paul-Henri Cahier of The Cahier Archive photographic collection. And it contains some never-seen-before photographs. There is a foreword by Bernie Ecclestone.<br />

Only 33 have reached the status from over 600 to compete in F1 across 70 years, not to mention the innumerable additional group who have not even made it that far. Few therefore would dispute long-serving F1 correspondent Maurice Hamilton describing F1's title as "the ultimate accolade in motorsport".<br />

And Hamilton's latest book, <i>Formula One: The Champions</i>, is a fitting tribute to them. Released tomorrow on March 3 and published by White Lion, it is a stylishly-presented and sizeable 240-page hardback made up of written and photographic portrayals of every one of those 33, from Giuseppe Farina through to Nico Rosberg, stopping off at legends such as Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher, among several others, along the way.<br />
<br />
Hamilton for this has allied his words with the photography of Bernard Cahier and his son Paul-Henri of The Cahier Archive photographic collection, reuniting the same trio that brought us 2016's <i>The Pursuit of Speed</i> title.<br />
<br />
The task of portraying all the title winners going back to 1950, who as Hamilton notes at the outset are a diverse band in an ever-changing category, is a sizeable one. Yet these authors are well-placed to take it on, with Hamilton offering 40 years on the F1 front line as well as a keen eye for its history, and The Cahier Archive stretching back to the F1's beginnings and, uniquely, remaining throughout that time in its original hands.<br />

Each of the 33 champions receive an individual and lavishly-illustrated portrayal across six to eight large pages, aside from Schumacher who perhaps appropriately gets 10. And Hamilton does not offer bland lists of achievements, as instead for each he offers a portrait of the personality and <i>modus operandi</i>, adding a few words of the driver's own too.<br />
<br />
Hamilton also, sensibly, eschews the task of comparing or ranking the drivers, describing that as "impossible to say". He also, equally sensibly, doesn't offer statistical comparisons. Instead he lays out each champion's story positively, albeit without pulling punches, and lets the reader decide.<br />
<br />
The format means Hamilton's portrayals are condensed, but even so for the most part he avoids being too broad brush. He also has clearly researched assiduously the champions from before his time, meaning the level of depth across eras is broadly consistent. Schumacher's, Alain Prost's and Ayrton Senna's chapters feel though more text-heavy than the rest.<br />

The only minor criticism of the book is that two or three of the earlier champions' chapters, such as that on Mike Hawthorn, feel a little light touch. But for the most part the detail offered is rich, such as that Jack Brabham after collecting his OBE in 1966 was, by somewhat alarmed officials, found in a Buckingham Palace courtyard, underneath his road car whacking its jammed starter motor, or the lengths Nelson Piquet went to help an old mechanic friend left crippled after a customer "used a handgun to settle his bill".<br />
<br />
Indeed there is plenty included that is little known, such as that a young Prost, who then was minded to be a footballer, only got involved in motor racing as he attended a kart track purely to keep his brother company on a family holiday, then won an impromptu race one-handed with his arm in plaster. Drivers' rises to the top as well as post-F1 activities, within and outside of motorsport, are covered too.<br />
<br />
Cahier's pictures - some never published before - are plenty, varied and high-quality, and add to the insight of each champion in and out of the car. These include Alberto Ascari pivoting his Lancia D50 through Monaco's Tabac, a delighted Colin Chapman with his arm tight around the neck of Jim Clark, still in the cockpit, celebrating Clark's first F1 win of many, or Prost's McLaren exiting the Detroit pits under the towering gaze of the Renaissance Centre.<br />
<br />
There's also a typically self-satisfied Farina, trophy in hand, glancing over his shoulder to smirk down the camera lens, Brabham power-sliding his BT19 as well as a shot of him poring typically over his Repco V8, and a bloodied Jochen Rindt in his Lotus 49 after a major smash at Montjuic in 1969 following wing failure.<br />
<br />
Plus the book's foreword is by none other than Bernie Ecclestone. He states that of the 33 champions "one way or another, I knew them all;" adding that "they're very special people". Though being Bernie he also between times goes on a tangent about why he thinks the championship isn't that important...<br />

Given all this, the book's £35 price tag does not feel excessive. The title will sit well in any F1 history enthusiast's collection.</div>

Today Formula 1 legend and four-time drivers' champion Alain Prost reaches his 65th birthday.<br />

The excitement this time of year at the season stretched ahead is inimitable. Of course, in an accompanying annual event, testing will come with health warnings about not reading too much into things. But it doesn't stop us trying...<br />
<br />
And there's never been a better time for F1 fans to follow it all. Not all that long ago, testing coverage would broadly amount to a few paragraphs and lap times in Autosport. Even until fairly recently the concept of televising testing was not something of this earth.<br />
<br />
Not now. As F1 TV Pro – F1's digital platform – will be broadcasting the six days of testing live from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm (CET). Plus it's added 11 new countries to its roster, bringing the total to 70 which includes the United States.<br />

The F1 TV coverage will include the on-track running, pitlane and garage filming, graphics and pit and trackside reporting, plus there's a range of on-demand content.<br />

In another innovation, there will be press conferences with drivers and team representatives, footage available on demand, in every test day's lunch break. F1 TV Pro subscribers also get Sky UK and F1's daily round-up show, produced in the paddock in the hour after testing finishes.<br />
<br />
The inimitable Will Buxton will also each day host 'Tech Talk' and on either Friday host 'Paddock Pass'. There also will be round-up 'What we learned' programmes on either Saturday, while on Friday February 28, after the final test concludes, Jolyon Palmer will give his take plus his predictions – no doubt in his usual no-holds-barred style.<br />

This year is no different. Will the dominant Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton be toppled? If so, will it be by Ferrari or Red Bull? At Ferrari, can Sebastian Vettel strike back against his young team-mate Charles Leclerc? Who will top the midfield? Can famous old Williams recover from its woeful 2019?<br />

The opening test starts today and continues until Friday, and test two is exactly a week on, from Wednesday 26 to Friday 28 February.<br />

And this year F1 fans will be able to follow in more detail than ever. The UK isn't one of the 70 countries with access to F1 TV Pro which is televising testing live, but it's far from the case that UK fans will miss out.<br />

As for the first time they will be able to watch all six days of testing live on Sky F1, starting at 8am UK time and stretching through each day to 5pm, with an hour's lunch break. Sky F1 also has a 'Story So Far' hour-long round-up show from the paddock at 5pm each test day.<br />

The excitement of a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monaco_Grand_Prix" target="_blank">Monaco Grand Prix</a> is always best experienced when you're there to see and feel it, and that's why every Formula 1 fan with the means to do so should attend without question. Because Neil is a true Lotus enthusiast he will ensure the team's memory is well represented and all facts are accurate. Whereas I, a total F1 nerd with a background in business, will try to identify where the team might have gone wrong, along with who or what might have been to blame, and how things might have been done differently. When researching for the 1994 book it was painful seeing a Lotus F1 car usually at the back of the grid, hence why I want answers: how did the once great team get to that point?<br />

The key reason behind the 1994 book's success was the author's passion, and Neil has that in bucket loads with this subject having researched it since 2012. Whereas I now have the publishing experience of channelling that passion into producing a great book. So not only will it benefit from having two authors for this reason, but also Neil will be giving the positive Team Lotus perspective with me playing devil's advocate to those views, something that worked really well in the 1994 book.<br />

Today the not-exactly-surprising confirmation has landed that the forthcoming Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled for April 19, is at least postponed due to coronavirus.<br />

But as with most things in Formula 1, grands prix being postponed or cancelled is far from being new.<br />

For F1 fans, the good news couldn’t come any sooner! The 2020 Formula 1 will be kicking off on the 15th of March in Albert Park, Melbourne. For those who are familiar with F1 or Formula 1, it is the highest class of single-seater motor race. It was sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and owned by the Formula 1 Group. Formerly known as the World Drivers' Championship, it became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981. A Formula One season consists of a series of races known as Grands Prix.<br />

Coronavirus And The Australian Grand Prix 2020</h2>

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 Coronavirus, we’ve seen major motorsports events getting either canceled or postponed. With the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix and Thai Motorcycle Grand Prix, it was speculated whether the Australian Grand Prix would share the same fate. But the good news for the fans! Turned out it wouldn’t. The Victorian Department of Health declared that the Australian Grand Prix would go ahead as planned. The CEO of Australian Grand Prix, Andrew Westacott has stated,<br />
<br />
“We are all systems go and gearing up for the 25th Formula One race in Melbourne next week. The finishing touches are being put on the circuit, Formula 1 freight and personnel are arriving in the coming days and we're looking forward to opening the gates to the public on Thursday, March 12."<br />
<br />
He also assured that The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has robust health and emergency management ready at each event. And are working collectively with health agencies and related government and emergency services organizations. <br />
<br />
On the other hand, The Italy based team, AlphaTauri has faced issues regarding the GP. Italy had the second-worst outbreak after China and thus going through certain restrictions. Alpha Tauri team’s head Franz Tost stated the issues at hand.<br />
<br />
“It’s changing all the time from the logistics side. We have to change all the flights because we are not allowed to go anymore via Singapore or Hong Kong. There’s a lot of work in front of us.<br />
<br />
This Coronavirus is a really serious story from the AlphaTauri side. I instructed all the employees to behave in a special manner. For example, we reduced traveling dramatically. Then people who are coming from the red zones in Italy should stay at home. We do not want that they come to the factory. Suppliers are supposed not to visit us in the factory. And we will see now what’s going on regarding your races in Melbourne or Bahrain.”<br />

What To Expect From The Championship</h2>

<br />Dual-Axis Steering System</h3>
<br />
If you are following F1 for a while now, you’d know that the Dual-Axis Steering System deployed on the Mercedes is making headlines. They came up with an innovative approach with the steering wheel. If the drivers pull or push the steering wheel the dual-axis system helps them adjust the toe of the front wheels to optimize mechanical grip. This provides aerodynamic benefits and extra speed. DAS was first spotted on the second day of pre-season F1 testing in Barcelona.<br />

However, the system was on the verge of creating controversies regarding the illegal front suspension alteration due to the toe-angle illegally changing the front suspension. To combat the problem FIA has put a ban on it. According to F1's 2021 regulations which got published at the end of last year, it was made clear that any changes to the angle of the wheels can only be made by the steering wheel.<br />

And even after securing the second position in the race he was disqualified for an illegal fuel flow rate. This time he’s trying his heart and soul not to lose against the jinx. Let’s hope this Grand Prix proves to be grand for him.<br />
